Haugtussa & Grieg
Summer concert
Summer concert featuring the timeless, moving, and beautiful work Haugtussa, presented in the light of Arne Garborg’s life and work in Jæren.
The program includes Arne Garborg’s Haugtussa set to music by Edvard Grieg, Op. 67. The cycle contains some of Grieg’s most beautiful and well-known songs. In addition, the previously unpublished Haugtussa songs will be performed, as well as some of his most famous songs such as Våren (Spring) and Ved Rondane (By Rondane).
Arne Garborg regarded Haugtussa as one of his most important books, written with a tender, retrospective gaze toward the Jæren of his childhood. Edvard Grieg was impressed and, not least, inspired by Haugtussa: “It is an utterly brilliant book, in which the music is already composed. One only needs to write it down.” In 1895, Grieg began working on 20 of the book’s total 71 poems, yet ultimately published only eight of them in Op. 67, a selection centered on nature mysticism and the theme of love. In connection with the Grieg Jubilee in 1993, six of these songs were published by Edition Peters under the title Songs from Haugtussa not included in Op. 67.
By opera singer Marit Kristine Risnes and pianist Mari-Anne Sagland.
Admission to Utstein Monastery is included in the concert ticket.
