Ensemble Nereides
Voices from the Sea
The sea has always been a source of inspiration for poets and composers, and much beautiful music has been written about it. Surrounded by the sea, Utstein Monastery is the perfect place to enjoy this atmospheric concert inspired by the voices of the sea. The audience will hear well-known melodies such as Dvorak’s “Song to the Moon”, Offenbach’s “Barcarolle”, and Gershwin’s “Summertime”, as well as lesser-performed treasures like Agathe Backer-Grøndahl’s “Songs from the Sea” and more.
Ensemble Nereides consists of French-Italian soprano Héloïse Baldelli, Slovak mezzo-soprano Izabela Maroun, and Estonian pianist Laura Kern.
The musicians draw inspiration from the musical traditions of their home countries, finding common ground in classical culture. In Greek mythology, the nereids were sea nymphs who sang with melodious voices as they danced beneath the moonlight. They symbolized everything beautiful and kind about the sea and were believed to be friendly and helpful to sailors.
Although the ensemble is rooted in the classical tradition, the three musicians enjoy experimenting with different genres. They have a particular talent for the comedic and theatrical, excelling in cabaret and operetta. At the same time, they interpret romantic opera, beautiful romances, and well-known musical theater songs with emotion and elegance.
